The bathyscaphe Trieste The first people to venture into the depths of the sea were Swiss marine explorer Jacques Piccard and US Navy lieutenant Don Walsh on January 23, 1960, aboard a submarine designed and partially built in our city’s shipyards: the bathyscaphe Trieste. It was a daring and legendary journey that took them to the bottom of the Challenger Abyss in seven hours and set a new record for underwater exploration. Since then, only 27 other people have reached such depths: most recently the American director, James Cameron, on board the Deepsea Challenger in 2012 and the Texan billionaire, Victor Vescovo, in 2019.
