Hunting krill The large krill biomass that sustains the Antarctic food web is the subject of increasingly aggressive industrial fishing. These omega-3 rich shrimps are highly sought after to produce feed for aquaculture, to achieve the pink hue in farmed salmon and to make food supplements. In the last 20 years, the harvest of Antarctic krill is estimated to have quadrupled and, today, the trawls of the large industrial fleets can harvest up to 450,000tonnes per year. Together with the effects of climate change and water acidification, overfishing is also contributing to putting the balance of the Antarctic ecosystem to the test.
