The controversial underwater mines Oil spills and pollution are not the only threats to the seabed. Seabed mining, or deep-sea mining, extracts valuable minerals such as manganese, cobalt, copper, nickel and rare metals that are essential to energy transition. However, this process can damage marine ecosystems by destroying deep-sea habitats, polluting the water and creating sediments that can affect water quality, the food web and the health of the ocean. Between countries pushing for the start of extraction and others calling for a ban, there is currently no international regulation on deep-sea mining.
