Black smokers Hydrothermal vents are formed where seawater penetrates cracks in the Earth’s crust and is heated by magma in the Earth’s mantle. When this mineral-rich hot water emerges from the springs and comes into contact with cold seawater, the minerals crystallise, turn black and form characteristic chimney structures. Alvin-Superstar The first discovery of hydrothermal vents dates back to 1977 and can be traced back to an exploration by Alvin, the legendary US Navy submersible that, to this day, is still used for oceanographic research. Built in 1964, the vessel accommodates a crew of three and can dive to depths of up to 4,500 m. It has contributed to numerous discoveries and scientific researches, including exploring the wreck of the Titanic in 1986 and analysing the seabed in the Gulf of Mexico following the environmental disaster caused by the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in 2010, which led to the formation of huge oil slicks on the seabed. Alvin currently carries out dozens of missions every year.
