This is the case for the cushion coral (Cladocora caespitosa), the only hard coral in the Gulf of Trieste that has been affected by bleaching processes caused by the heatwaves of recent years. At the marine protected area in Miramare, researchers were able to detect, through regular observation, phenomena of partial or complete bleaching in the summer of 2023, which damaged more than 70% of the madrepores present. Warm sea In recent years, the average temperatures in the Gulf of Trieste have reached record levels: in 2023 they were 17.4 °C, one degree higher than in the previous 20 years. The same applies to heatwaves, which are becoming more frequent, longer and more intense, with a peak of almost 25 °C in the summer of 2023, and can even reach the deepest seabed of the Gulf. focus I FONDALI DEL GOLFO DI TRIESTE / THE SEABED OF THE GULF OF TRIESTE
